Soil protection, to which land-saving spatial planning makes a significant contribution, has already attracted a series of commitments at various levels (World Soil Charter, European Soil Charter, Austrian Soil Charter, Manifesto for the Soil and Land Alliance of European Cities and Towns), but so far there has been no corresponding declaration at the level of the Alpine Region.
During the Tyrolean EUSALP presidency, EUSALP Action Group 6 elaborated a joint declaration on sustainable land use and soil protection. After a public consultation process and political coordination with the single EUSALP States and regions the declaration could gather the support of 20 regions and 6 Alpine states.
The recognition of the declaration by the political General Assembly on 20 November in Innsbruck was a strong sign that the Alpine Space is jointly committed to the careful use of this important natural resource.
