Transtat: Reinventing the slopes, a new chapter for alpine ski resorts

High in the Alpine valleys, where snow-covered peaks once promised steady winters and bustling ski seasons, uncertainty has become the new norm. Climate change is reshaping the landscape, leaving many ski resorts grappling with a hard truth: the model that sustained them for decades is melting away. The question is no longer whether to adapt, but how. And that’s where TRANSTAT begins its work.

At the heart of the project are Living Labs: think tanks where local people and professionals join forces. Ski resort managers, small business owners, environmentalists, policymakers, and residents gather not to debate whether change is needed, but to co-design what it should look like. Together, they explore practical, place-based alternatives: summer hiking and wellness tourism, cultural experiences, renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, and all-season local economies.

What sets TRANSTAT apart is its forward-looking energy. Instead of clinging to what once was, it channels change into opportunity, transforming climate pressure into innovation and local concerns into shared momentum. It shows that the Alpine region doesn’t have to choose between identity and adaptation.
