AG1 Success Story
Valtellina, a new map for mountain transition
In Valtellina, like much of the Alpine region, climate change and economic shifts are widening the gap between local needs and territorial resources. As marginal areas grow more disconnected, the challenge is no longer just development, it’s reconfiguration.
The Valtellina pilot project responds by applying a spatial approach to transition. It aligns European and national strategies with local demands, connecting agriculture, energy, manufacturing, tourism, research, and training into a cohesive framework. The goal is not just adaptation, but activation: transforming fragmented territories into innovation ecosystems.
This approach maps how climate impacts land use and the built environment, tracks how economic changes reshape the physical landscape, and promotes spatial regeneration to close gaps and create opportunity. Design becomes a tool for resilience, using spatial planning to support cohesion and transition policies across scales.
