EUSALP youth competition:
These are the five finalists for the pitching session in Milan
Under the slogan “Your Alps! Your Future! Your Idea!” the youth has been called on to submit innovative project ideas for a sustainable development of the Alpine region. 20 young people from Italy, France, Austria, Germany and Slovenia followed this call and proposed in total ten creative project ideas for the PITCH YOUR PROJECT competition. Now an international expert jury consisting e.g. of representatives of the Italian EUSALP Presidency and the Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention has selected the top five projects which will be presented at the EUSALP Annual Forum in Milan.
Three projects from Italy and one from each Germany and Austria made it into the Top 5 of Pitch Your Project 2019:
In the age group from 20 to 25 years, the jury chose the following three projects: „My Cabin“ is the submission by two young men from Konstanz, Germany, who want to mediate legal and close to nature overnight accommodation in the Alps by means of a website and app without damaging the sensitive nature. Protecting local shops is the aim of the project „Edelweiß“, proposed by two participants from Chieti and Bormio in Italy. They suggest introducing a complementary local currency as a form of payment exclusively in local businesses. A group of three from the Italian mountain village Dossena has developed a solution to overcome the landslide risk in their region. With „Don’t Drain-Out Our Alps“ they propose to establish terraces with dry-stone walls, in order to collect and re-use rain water.
Also from the age group from 16 to 19 years, two projects got listed in the Top 5: “Zero-waste Hiking” is a project proposed by a 19 year old young man from Formigine in Italy. He aims to improve the sustainability of hiking in terms of waste dealing through a zero-waste programme for Alpine huts and infrastructure and an awareness campaign. A whole school class from the Zillertal in Austria has developed the project idea “Eichi and Aussi”. The students from an advanced school for tourism in the Tyrol plan to implement a car sharing app in order to reduce individual car traffic. One part of the project is a bonus system to motivate young drivers to use the app.
The finalists will present their project ideas to an international audience in a pitching session at the EUSALP Annual Forum on November 29 in Milan. The audience will select the winners in an online voting. The winning projects will be awarded a price money of 5,000, 3,000 and 2,000 Euro which shall allow the young participants to realize their project ideas. Besides the competition, the exchange between the young generation from all different parts of the Alpine region and EUSALP experts is a key focus at the Annual Forum.
The youth competition PITCH YOUR PROJECT is presented in its second year by the EU Commission and the Land Tyrol in order to involve young people when it is about to shape a sustainable future for the Alps.
WE ARE NOT SURE WHETHER OUR PROJECT MEETS THE PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS. HOW DO WE FIND OUT?
First of all, you can check the detailed conditions for participation and check your project with regard to the mentioned points. If you are still unsure, please send a short description of your project in English to the project coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org.
WHAT IS A PITCH?
A pitch is a short and concise presentation of a project or project idea to find supporters. You have three minutes to convince your audience of your project or project idea. Two additional minutes will then be given to the audience to ask questions.
When preparing the presentation, concentrate on giving the reasons and objectives for the project, briefly highlight its implementation and discuss its relevance and feasibility. Feel free to use media (posters, PowerPoint presentations, etc.). Please let us know in advance what we should provide for you.
HOW DO WE KNOW THAT OUR PROJECT WAS SENT BY E-MAIL AND HAS ARRIVED?
Every applicant will receive a confirmation by e-mail within 48 hours that the application has been received.
WE ARE 16 YEARS OLD AND WONDER IF WE CAN COMPETE WITH THE PROJECTS OF YOUNG ADULTS WHO ARE 25 YEARS OLD. DOES THE JURY CONSIDER THE AGE OF THE APPLICANTS?
The jury will consider the age of the applicants in the selection process. To create a fair competition, the applications will be divided into two categories: 16 to 19 year olds and 20 to 25 year olds. The five pitch projects will then be selected from both categories. The best rated project applicants from each of the two age categories will have the opportunity to present their projects at the EUSALP Annual Forum in Milan.
&rarr WHAT EXACTLY IS EUSALP?
The Alpine Region faces many challenges. Due to its unique natural and geographical characteristics, climate change, natural hazards, demographic changes or the negative effects of transport hit the Alpine Region with particular intensity. At the same time, economic globalisation requires a consistently high level of competitiveness and innovation. The seven Alpine states of France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Slovenia and their 48 provinces, Länder, cantons and regions have therefore joined forces within the framework of the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP) to meet these challenges with joint initiatives and projects.
OUR QUESTION DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE FAQ. WHO CAN WE CONTACT?
If you have any questions that cannot be answered via the website, please feel free to e-mail them in English to the project coordinator: email@example.com.
