AG4 Success Story
The Nice-Ventimiglia-Cuneo Railway Line, from storm damage to cross-border lifeline
In the shadow of the Alps, the Nice–Ventimiglia–Cuneo railway was fading. Years of underuse, rising costs, and storm damage from Alex in 2019 left the line near abandonment. In the Roya Valley, the silence of stalled trains echoed a deeper fear: that vital connections were slipping away.
But instead of closure, something shifted. A new labelling process recognised the railway’s deeper value, not just as infrastructure, but as a link between countries, regions, and people. The line was championed, elevated, and by 2024, officially integrated into Europe’s Trans-European Transport Network.
Now it has funding, a future, and a second chance. What was once at risk of being forgotten is now a symbol of how the Alps can reconnect, across borders, through sustainable mobility, and with a shared commitment to hold the line.
