Natural hazard model, learning to live with risk

In the Alpine region, floods and extreme weather are no longer rare, they’re part of daily life. But managing natural hazards isn’t just about walls and warning systems. It’s about people knowing what to do before disaster strikes. That’s why a new tool was built: a hands-on, interactive display that lets people simulate floods, landslides, and countermeasures. It turns risk into something you can see, touch, and understand. Since its launch, over 30,000 people, many of them schoolchildren, have engaged with the model across Germany, Italy, and Slovenia. It’s been part of exhibitions, awareness days, and public events, showing how knowledge can be as protective as infrastructure.

The model is spreading, with new versions underway. The message is clear: when people understand risk, they’re more likely to act. And in the Alps, that knowledge saves lives.
